Some things will not change!
Our real workshop is out in the bush
Our combined workshop is out in the bush,
Fiona is a fossicker, potter, sculptor, rock &
gemstone hunter, tree lover and now she is also
a photographer so we try to be in the right place
at the right time as often as we can, well that’s
the goal. Anytime is the right time really, but,
despite detailed trip planning we have to be
lucky as well.
Getting back safe is the number one priority and convincing the ‘boss’ to stay in one place
for longer than a couple of days is a tough call. Arriving when conditions are right is always
a challenge and often we miss out, so we may stop and wait a while. Fiona’s rocks have
been there for millions of years but photo opportunities constantly evolve.
We both love travelling all around Oz and meeting people, the ‘boss’ is an avid ‘rock collector’
and a wizard with all sorts of arts & crafts, I’m a photographer and I only do weddings
sometimes.
Taking six, eight or maybe a dozen really good images each year is a good year. I try to get
out of as much work as I can at home so we can take off in a heartbeat, when on the road I
mostly do as I’m told and point the vehicle in the right direction.

No idea where we are, but we are travelling OK at the moment. 4B & van are fine, the
bride is fine and I am doing what I’m told.

Nearly got bogged in the red stuff, Fi was chatting away and I got inattentive to the road
surface and off we went. Bit of spade work got us going again and my ears’s got a floggin!

Footy is on this arvo as we are in a good spot, but, another mob has turned up and
looking for a BBQ & a few stubbies - forget the footy!

Fiona Horton
A bit about the bride; Fiona is a porcelain doll-ceramics teacher and has been teaching
various associated crafts for the last 30 years. She opened her first studio in Melbourne,
later moving to Sydney and opened her shop-studio in Ashfield and stayed put for several
years and continued teaching from her home studio. She indulged in many other forms of
craft until porcelain dolls took over her life for many years, traveling to many arts shows
and selling her dolls across Australia and overseas.
Sculpting was the next venture among her impressive arsenal of craft skills are porcelain
painting, enamelling, leatherwork, jewellery, resin, copper work and Poly clay. Fiona took
out the Blue Ribbon event at Kensington Doll Show in 1989 when that was the biggest doll
show in OZ .... she won’t tell you about this stuff, but I will.

Main Interest in photography is landscapes, interesting people, places where
photographers seldom go, infra-red and the continuing emergence of new techniques .
When everything falls into place we quickly pack our van and take off for the bush,
sometimes via a city or large country towns but always the bush is the primary destination.
Of course the weather plays a large hand in what we do, genrerally we can drive through
bad stuff and out the other side or wait it out. What about travel plans - plenty of food,
clothes, warm blankets, water and fuel is all we need.
Rock hunting equipment for Fiona is essential, a few shovels, screens and plenty of buckets.
For me its half a dozen cameras, the ever present laptop, android tablets, wireless
connections, software tools and plenty of battery power. Maintaining websites and
electronic database’s on the road consumes lots of battery power.
